Gothic style

Gothic style

For all the people choosing to be Goth it means adopting an entirely different lifestyle from the usual one which defines them when it comes to listening specific music to all the way down to the unlaced military boots they wear. Wearing Gothic clothes means having a specific taste in fashion.

There is not one single goth fashion, there are many branches. Some gothics like a romantic style with lace, tailored velvet jackets and period items, whereas others prefer punk, with a spiked collar and bondage pants, and some choose cyber style with goggles, latex, and big industrial boots.

Often Goth pictures and movies serve as an inspiration to many young people. They find there items which can be incorporated in their style. However, copying someone is ok only if it is Halloween.

In search for good Gothic items thrift stores can be a great idea when trying to find original, cheap clothes. Sometimes even mainstream clothing shops have basic pieces like black sweaters which can add to ones wardrobe.

Try tight clothes can work well for both boys and girls who are want to be Gothic. Boys shouldn’t try wearing tight clothes if they mind looking a bit more feminine. If a person’s body is right and looks good they can wear tight clothes but those who aren’t skinny should try to avoid it. Goth boys can choose black jeans with some metal details on them.

Many goths usually wear high, black boots. There are many different styles of boots, look around and choose a style you like. A wide range can be found in specialised Goth shops. Gothic Angel Boots is a great choice for all those with sophisticated taste.

When it comes to hair contrary to popular belief, Gothic style people do not have to dye or even excessively style their hair to be Goth. Many represent the epitome of dark Goth fashion keeping their natural hair color. Before dying their hair every person needs to find the colour which will look good on them. Not all colors will look good on everyone. Some people like to clump, spike or even make their hair messy. Goth is an offshoot of Punk, so many Goths do backcomb their hair into huge explosions, or style their hair into huge frizzy spikes or whatever else they can think of. Every hairstyle needs to be about expressing one’s individuality.

It is also interesting to remember that black isn’t the only color that exists in the goth lifestyle. They also wear dark reds, greens and violets. Sometimes cyber or industrial goth accepts even neon colors.

When it comes to make up Goth makeup is usually dramatic: black heavy eyeliner and dark shades with heavy application with colors such as black, red, and purple around and on the eyelids. Black lipstick used to be popular but nowadays it is much less than it used to be.

Whatever part of Gothic style one adopts, it is important that a person keeps their originality and leaves their personal touch on every piece of clothing they wear.

Wearing Gothic clothes certainly is a statement, but staying original is an important part of every style. Adopting Goth style completely or just partially should be an individual choice leaving space to many creative fashionable ideas.

Louis Reard – Inventor of the bikini

Louis Reard – Inventor of the bikini

Imagining beaches without the bikini is like imagining our wardrobes without jeans.  The bikini is a veritable icon in the fashion world, so it’s strange to think it was created just over 60 years ago.  Yet from its first outing to its most contemporary incarnation, the bikini has been an irrepressible force in fashion, radically changing the possibilities for women’s beachwear, influencing gender relations and providing us with some of the most iconic moments in popular culture.  Stranger still then, that it was actually invented by a Parisian automotive engineer.

July 5th 1946, the Second World War has just finished and Europe is in its first year of peace for six years.  A mechanical engineer turned fashion designer is just about to unveil a design which will shock the West so much that the Vatican issue a condemnation and many countries issue an outright ban.  At the Piscine Molitor in Paris, an exotic dancer from the Casino de Paris Micheline Bernardini is unveiled wearing a skimpy two piece swimsuit christened “the Bikini” designed by Louis Reard who dubs his invention “smaller than the world’s smallest bathing suit”.

Louis Reard was a fashion designer with a sense of humour.  Born in Switzerland in 1896, he originally began a career as a mechanical engineer working in the automotive industry, but in the 1940s began running his mother’s lingerie boutique in Paris.  Around this time, swimwear designer Jacques Heim was working on a sartorial invention which would be “the world’s smallest bathing suit”.  He came up with a design named the “Atome” after the small unit of matter; the atom.  To compete with Jacques Heim, Reard decided to do a bit of designing of his own.  After observing women in San Tropez rolling up their swimsuits to try and get a better tan, Reard realised that small swimsuits were the future and got to work.  The result was far more risqué and much smaller than Heim’s design, made out of only 30 inches of fabric.  As a tongue-in-cheek gesture and nod to Reard’s awareness as to how controversial his design would be, Reard named the swimwear after a recent, headlining US atomic test that took place off the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific.  The name not only paid dues to the anticipated outcry his design would cause but was a gentle mocking of Heim’s “Atome”; Heim gave Reard the atom and Reard blew it up.  Just to make it all clear, Reard added the irreverent tagline “smaller than the world’s smallest bathing suit” so Heim knew who was targeted.    The bikini itself had a newspaper print graphic to pay further homage to the potential uproar the suit might cause.

And Reard was right to predict this reaction.  The two-piece was so scandalous that Reard had to pursue an exotic dancer, comfortable with being nude, to model it as no other model would.  Though two-piece swimwear had been around since the 1930s, never before had so much flesh been exposed, leading countries such as Italy and Spain to put it in place an outright ban on bikinis and the Vatican to issue a condemnation.

But the bikini proved irrepressible.  Initially tentative, women soon started wearing bikinis regularly on European beaches after Bridget Bardot famously donned the risqué two-piece in the affluent French town Saint-Tropez.  The fashion quickly spread to the point where Italian and Spanish beaches had to relinquish their bans on bikinis as they became unworkable.  By the 1960s, when the West was in the throes of the sexual revolution, bikinis had spread to the US where they were popularised by Hollywood, surf fashion and bands like The Beach Boys.

And though the potency of the bikini’s power to shock has been diluted it remains a divisive trope in contemporary culture, with some arguing that the bikini represents the emancipation of women and others arguing that it is used as a weapon of oppression.   French fashion historian Olivier Saillard argues that the bikini imposed itself due to “the power of women and not the power of fashion” and that “The emancipation of swimwear has always been linked to the emancipation of women”.  Yet, author of The Body Project: An Intimate History of American Girls Joan Jacobs Brumberg argues that the bikini “is able to exert a noose-like grip on the psyche and physical health of girls and women.”  She argues, “Girls and women have been stripped bare by a sexually expressive culture whose beauty dictates have exerted a major toll on their physical and emotional health”.

Fans show their school pride by wearing Penn State football jerseys

People like wearing Penn State football jerseys as a way to show their pride in the school they love and to honor past and current players.  Fortunately for fans, there are plenty of jerseys to choose from.

Penn State University provides a full line of officially licensed merchandise that is loved by students, alumni and fans of the college’s popular sports teams.  Among the most sought-after and worn clothing items are football jerseys with the numbers of past legends, current players and future stars.

In college towns across the country, football season is a time of year that students and fans look forward to.  Many consider exciting college football games to be much more enjoyable than games at the pro level.  This may be because people tend to have more school spirit than spirit for a professional team they have no real connection with.

One way that people who are fans of Penn State University like to connect with their football team, the Nittany Lions, is to wear the team’s jerseys.  The university licenses a wide range of jersey styles and colors with numbers of notable past, current and future stars.

The Penn State Nittany Lions wear essentially two jerseys during the football season – navy blue for home games played in State College, Pa., and white for games on the road.  Typically, the home jerseys are the most popular among fans, but the white jerseys are also big sellers.

Part of the popularity of Penn State football can be attributed to legendary coach Joe Paterno, who was head coach at Penn State from 1966 to 2011.  He passed away in 2012, but not before leaving a coaching legacy that is rarely matched in college football.  In his career as head coach, Paterno’s teams amassed a record of 298 wins, 136 defeats and three ties.  His teams won 18 bowl games.

When fans wear jerseys of their favorite Penn State players, they feel part of the revelry of the great sport of college football in Pennsylvania.  But it’s not just locals who enjoy wearing these licensed apparel items – Penn State has fans all over the country, and it’s not unusual to see the school’s jerseys and other clothing worn in any city.

Older fans and alumni often choose jerseys with the numbers of past great players on them, while current students and younger fans like wearing jerseys that point to current stars.  But either way, football jerseys are one of the top-selling clothing items among Penn State fans.  And during football season, you’ll see them out in force as the school’s fans turn out in droves to show support for their team.

Doug Thomas is a freelance writer interested in The Penn State Room, a State College, Pa.-based retailer of officially licensed Penn State jerseys and related apparel items along with a full line of other licensed school merchandise.  You can learn more about The Penn State Room by visiting McLanahan’s Penn State Room.
